Landscape Rock Calculator – How It Works

Choose a shape (rectangle, circle, or custom area), set a depth, and pick a rock type. The calculator converts depth to feet, multiplies by area for cubic feet, divides by 27 for cubic yards, and multiplies yards by the selected bulk density to get tons. Bag counts are estimated by dividing cubic feet by common bag sizes (0.5 / 0.75 cu ft) or your custom size.

Typical Rock / Stone Bulk Densities (tons per cubic yard)

  • River Rock: ~1.40 t/yd³
  • Pea Gravel: ~1.45 t/yd³
  • Crushed Stone 3/4″: ~1.60 t/yd³
  • Decomposed Granite: ~1.50 t/yd³
  • Limestone: ~1.60 t/yd³
  • Slate Chips: ~1.40 t/yd³
  • Lava Rock: ~0.70 t/yd³ (very light)
  • Coarse Sand: ~1.35 t/yd³

FAQs – Landscape Rock / Gravel / Stone Coverage

How to calculate rock for landscaping?

Area (ft²) × depth (in) ÷ 12 = cubic feet. Divide by 27 for cubic yards. Multiply yards by bulk density (t/yd³) for tons. Example: 300 ft² at 2″ → 300×2/12 = 50 cu ft = 1.85 cu yd. At 1.4 t/yd³ → 2.6 tons.

How many square feet does a yard of rock cover?

Coverage per yard at depth d inches: 324 ÷ d ft². At 2″, ≈162 ft²; at 3″, ≈108 ft².

Landscape rock calculator in tons?

Enter density in t/yd³ (or choose a preset). Tons = cubic yards × t/yd³. You can also switch to lb/ft³ or kg/m³.

How many bags equal a cubic yard?

1 cubic yard = 27 cu ft. That’s ~54 bags of 0.5 cu ft or ~36 bags of 0.75 cu ft.

What depth should I use?

Decorative beds: 1.5–2″ • Walkways: 2–3″ • Driveways: 3–4″ (use angular stone for lock-up). Always check local specs for base layers.

Why do suppliers quote different tonnages?

Moisture, particle shape, and pit source change bulk density. This tool uses your chosen density for transparent estimates—confirm with your supplier.

Notes & Safety

  • Internal dimensions & true coverage area give best results.
  • Round up for edge taper, compaction, and loss during handling.
  • For heavy loads, confirm truck capacity and driveway/foundation limits.
